Removal of calluses (helomas) in a podiatry clinic

The removal of calluses, also called corns or hyperkeratosis, is a clinical procedure that is performed using specialized, safe and generally painless techniques when carried out by a trained professional.

1. Clinical assessment

It begins with a detailed foot assessment to determine:

  • Type of lesion (hard, soft or diffuse heloma)
  • Depth and degree of keratinization
  • Presence of pain, inflammation, or infection
  • Biomechanical factors (pressure, friction, footwear)

This allows us to define the appropriate approach and avoid recurrences.

2. Delamination of hyperkeratosis

Controlled removal of superficial layers of thickened skin is performed using sterile instruments (podiatric scalpel).

  • Precise and progressive technique
  • It does not invade healthy tissue.
  • Reduces pressure and pain immediately

3. Enucleation (if a nucleus exists)

In cases of deep helomas, the central core, which is the most compact and painful part, is enucleated.

  • The keratin “plug” is removed
  • Internal pressure is relieved
  • Immediate improvement of symptoms

4. Conditioning and protection

After elimination:

  • The treated area softens.
  • Moisturizing or keratolytic agents are applied.
  • Protective coverings (pads or dressings) can be placed to prevent friction.

5. Education and prevention

A fundamental part of the treatment:

  • Recommendation for appropriate footwear
  • Pressure point correction
  • Home care routine
  • Clinical follow-up if necessary

Important considerations

  • The procedure is non-invasive and bloodless under normal conditions
  • It is performed with sterile instruments and professional technique.
  • In patients with risk factors such as diabetes mellitus or vascular disorders, management is much more controlled
